About Dan Norton

Dan Norton, Inventor Automatic Boat Docking System | Assisted Docking | Self-Docking

Dan Norton grew up sailing on Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island.  Many times he often found himself on the bow of his family boat sticking his arms and body out to grab the mooring lines while his father would navigate around neighboring yachts in the harbor.  This was a dangerous and stressful situation that he later realized was not uncommon to many boaters.  He thought over and over "there must be a better way!"

Daniel later moved to Boston, and earned his Bachelor's of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1998, from Northeastern University. He quickly became involved in automation and robotics, and worked as a robotics developer for over 2 decades.

Daniel later founded Momentum Marine in order to promote vessel landing and docking solutions for commercial and recreational watercraft. He is the inventor of the NLS (Nautical Landing System) technology and has been developing the Smartlander positive restraint system for use in heavy duty marine applications. He partnered with New York Water Taxi to develop an experimental docking system that utilizes a novel method for maintaining compliance in a rigidly coupled state. Later on the project was shelved and now the technology is available.

Daniel has a strong background in locking mechanism development, robotic docking systems, and electric propulsion systems. Dan has spent over 18 years working in the technical design engineering arena for companies including Caterpillar Inc., Gerber Technology, and ATI Industrial Automation, in various project management and engineering development positions.
